The National Banana Research Program is one of the national priority crop commodity programs of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) whose mandate is to develop and promote technologies for enhancing the contribution of banana value chains for food security and agro-industrialisation.

Research

The National Banana Programme develops and promotes technologies for enhancing the contribution of banana value chains for food security and Agro-industrialisation.
Advisory

Advisory

The programme provides advisory services on the best practices to productive banana farming including how one can plan to manage a plantation using resources within and around banana cropping systems.
Capacity building

Capacity building

The programme also provides capacity building to students and researchers focusing on the banana production and productivity. 

The Openfield Timeline

In 1990's, the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) and its partners International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Bioversity started a banana breeding programme in Uganda
The first improved banana varieties (hybrids) were released in 2010. Kabana 6H (M9) and Kabana 7H (M2). 

Special Attributes:

  • Tolerant to nematodes
  • Tolerant to banana weevils
  • Resistant to Black Sigatoka
  • Yield capacity of 60tons/ha/yr 
  • Best for cooking

NARO released 4 improved banana varieties including NAROBan1 (M19), NAROBan2 (M20), NAROBan3 (M255) and NAROBan4 (M27)

Special Attributes:

  • Tolerant to nematodes and weevils
  • Resistant to Black Sigatoka
  • Bunch weight 61kgs - 84kgs
  • Yields capacity of more than 60tons/ha/year
  • Soft, tasty, aromatic and near-yellow color.

NARO released NAROBan4 (M27 in 2018.)

Best for: Cooking

Special Attributes:

  • Tolerant to nematodes and weevils
  • Resistant to Black Sigatoka
  • Bunch weight 60.5kgs
  • Yields capacity of 54.5tons/ha/year
  • Soft, tasty, aromatic and near-yellow color.
  • Economic return ha/yr Ugx 13,612,500
